August has been a busy month in the earning world!
Two platforms we've been watching closely, Paze and Rove, have seen some significant changes. And both are great examples of why earning more points isn't just about knowing which credit card to use. It's about understanding all the different layers available to us and knowing when those layers change.
Let's get into it!
PAZE: A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE JUNE
We first introduced you to Paze back in our June newsletter, when it began rolling out as a new online checkout option and, more importantly for us, a new opportunity to earn MORE points.
As a quick refresher, Paze is a digital wallet created by some of the largest U.S. banks. Instead of creating another account and manually loading cards into another wallet, eligible credit and debit cards from participating banks can automatically be available within Paze.
When a merchant accepts Paze, you simply select Paze at checkout, choose the card you want to use, and complete your purchase. But Paze isn't just another way to pay.
As we discussed in June, Chase has been incentivizing cardholders to use Paze with targeted offers that can earn as much as 10x Ultimate Rewards points. That can turn purchases you were already going to make into significant earning opportunities!
Since we first wrote about Paze in June, the opportunities and the merchants have continued to evolve.
The Merchant List Is NOT Static
This is probably the biggest lesson we've learned about Paze: Just because a merchant accepts Paze today doesn't mean it will accept Paze tomorrow. And the reverse can be true, too.
We've watched Macy's come and go from Paze, making it important to check the current checkout options rather than relying on an old merchant list. We have see Newegg change and devalue it's terms and conditions. And the biggest recent change is Sephora. Sephora has removed Paze as a checkout option entirely.
And a good reminder that Paze is still a developing ecosystem.
Earning opportunities are going to move around. A great Paze + Chase opportunity at one merchant may disappear, while a new merchant could suddenly create another one.
One Last Chance at $10 Back:
And while the $10 promotion isn't the main reason we're interested in Paze, we'd be remiss not to remind you about it before it disappears!
The current Paze promotion offers:
Spend $10+ with Paze → Get $10 back
You can earn the credit up to 10 times per eligible card, and the promotion is scheduled to end September 10.
So, if you've been sitting on eligible cards with unused credits, don't forget to use them before the promotion ends.
Keep Paze on your radar.
Between changing merchants, Chase bonus opportunities, and the ability to potentially layer Paze into a larger earning stack, this is one payment method we're going to continue watching closely.
ROVE JUST BECAME A LOT MORE INTERESTING
If you've been following Earning Multipliers for a while, you already know we're big fans of Rove.
Until now, we've primarily used Rove in two ways: earning additional miles through its shopping portal and earning significant amounts of Rove Miles through hotel bookings.
That's changing.
Rove just announced its largest platform expansion since launch, adding several completely new ways to earn Rove Miles — and some of them could create VERY interesting stacking opportunities.
NEW: Rove Dining
Rove is officially entering the card-linked dining space with Rove Dining.
The concept is simple: link an eligible card to Rove, eat at a participating restaurant, pay with your linked card, and automatically earn Rove Miles.
No shopping portal to remember. No special link to click before dinner.
And, naturally, our first question is: What else can we stack with it?
Card-linked dining programs can be particularly interesting because they operate in the background. We'll be testing Rove Dining and looking closely at how it interacts with other card-linked programs and offers. At first test, I think we will have success stacking with Rewards Network!
NEW: Rove Gift Cards
Rove is also launching a gift card marketplace, allowing members to earn Rove Miles when purchasing gift cards.
This one immediately caught our attention. Why?
Because gift cards can potentially create another layer in an earning strategy.
Instead of simply thinking:
What credit card should I use at this merchant?
We can now potentially ask:
Can I earn Rove Miles buying the gift card, earn points from the credit card I use to buy the gift card, AND find another earning opportunity when I actually use it?
As of the time of this newsletter, Rove Miles gift card purchases process on your credit card as Rove meaning they code as hotel/travel.
NEW: In-Store Earning
Rove Shopping is moving beyond the computer.
Rove is adding in-store shopping offers, which means we'll increasingly need to think about Rove before purchases we make in person not just purchases we make online.
This is another area where things could get particularly interesting when combined with the right credit card + card-linked offer + Rove.
More options = more opportunities.
NEW: Rove Mobile App
Rove is also launching its first mobile app, making it much easier to find and manage earning opportunities on the go.
The app is launching on iOS, with an Android public beta.
UPDATED: Shopping Extensions
Rove has also rebuilt its Chrome and Safari browser extensions.
The extensions can alert you when Rove Miles are available while you're shopping online, which helps solve one of the biggest problems with shopping portals:
Remembering to actually use them.
BIG CHANGES TO ROVE HOTELS
Rove Hotels is getting a major overhaul as well.
The booking experience has been redesigned, thousands of additional properties have been added, and Rove has significantly expanded the availability of Loyalty Eligible hotel rates.
A Loyalty Eligible rate can allow you to book through Rove and earn Rove Miles while still potentially receiving the things you would normally expect from booking directly with the hotel:
Hotel points + elite-night credits + elite-status benefits + Rove Miles.
That combination can make Rove very different from a traditional online travel agency.
As always, compare the rate you're seeing on Rove against the hotel's direct rate before booking. But when the numbers line up, this can be an exceptionally valuable earning opportunity.
WHAT WE'RE WATCHING NEXT
There's a common theme this month is: The earning ecosystem isn't static.
Paze merchants are appearing and disappearing. Chase is experimenting with incentives for using a new payment method.
Meanwhile, Rove is expanding from shopping and hotels into dining, gift cards and in-store purchases.
That means our job isn't to memorize one perfect strategy.
It's to develop the habit of asking the right questions before we spend.
#1 — Am I using the right credit card?
#2 — Is there a card-linked offer I can add?
#3 — Is there a portal or additional earning opportunity I can stack on top?
Don't just earn points on your purchases. Find the layers and STACK THEM.
Happy earning!
