Welcome, JGOOT Family Adventurers!
It's October! And that brings us to our new JGOOT Family travel theme: Dallas (Fall Edition)
đ Headline Experience: Pumpkin Madness at the Dallas Arboretum
If youâve seen a pumpkin patch, forget itâthis isnât that. The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden transforms every fall into an orange-tinted wonderland with over 100,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash arranged into whimsical villages, themed houses, and towering displays. Kids dart through pumpkin âmazes,â parents snap frame-worthy photos at every turn, and the whole thing sprawls across the lakeside lawns of White Rock Lake. Itâs not just pumpkinsâitâs pumpkin theater. Even seasoned travelers say itâs one of the most jaw-dropping autumn displays in the U.S.
Tip: Book Autumn at the Arboretum tickets early and hit the gates at opening for golden light and calmer crowds.
đ Reunion Tower
Think âDallasâ Eiffel Towerââa glowing orb with an observation deck that puts you 470 feet up. The GEO-Deck has interactive touchscreens for kids, telescopes for skyline spotting, and the thrill of standing above the city with nothing but glass between you and the drop. Families love timing their visit to sunsetâwatch day turn to night, then step back inside Hyatt without ever needing to touch the street.
đ Pioneer Plaza
If your kids have ever played âpretend cowboy,â this is the real-life version. Pioneer Plaza is a massive outdoor installation with 49 bronze longhorns and three cowboys on horseback, frozen mid-drive across a prairie. Itâs the largest bronze monument of its kind in the worldâbasically a family photo op that screams âTexas.â Bonus: itâs free and just a short stroll from Hyatt Regency (linked under stay recommendations).
đ Dealey Plaza & The Sixth Floor Museum
History buffs, this one matters. Standing in Dealey Plaza where JFK was assassinated is surrealâyou can see the grassy knoll, the infamous âXâ on the street, and then step into the Sixth Floor Museum inside the old Texas School Book Depository. Itâs one of the most moving museum experiences in the U.S., with exhibits that balance history, politics, and personal reflection. Older kids and teens will recognize the gravity hereâitâs a chance to turn a trip into a teachable, unforgettable moment.
đ¤ Fort Worth Stockyards (Overnight Side Trip)
Hereâs where the cowboy boots come alive. The Stockyards arenât just tourist fluffâtheyâre living Texas history with real cattle drives, brick streets, and music echoing from saloon doors. Twice a day, longhorn steers with horns wider than your car march down the street in a choreographed drive. Mule Alley is lined with shops and restaurants, and Billy Bobâs Texas (the worldâs largest honky-tonk) packs in live music and dancing. Kids love the grit and spectacle, parents love the food and photo ops.
Where to Stay:
đ¨ Hyatt Regency Dallas at Reunion Tower
This is not just a hotelâitâs part of the skyline. The Hyatt Regency Dallas sits at the base of the iconic Reunion Tower. Guests get indoor skybridge access to the towerâso you can literally roll out of bed, grab breakfast, and head straight up for 360° views of Dallas. At sunset, the skyline sparkles; by night, the lights stretch forever. The lobby itself buzzes with energy, making it a great family base camp.
The Hyatt Regency Dallas has points availability throughout the month of October, but for a nice long weekend, a 2 queen bed room is available from 10/16 to 10/19 for 36K points, vs a cash price of $906.73, for a 2.5 cpp redemption.
đ¨ Hyatt Place Fort Worth/Stockyards
Want the Stockyards in surround sound? Stay right in the middle of it all at the Hyatt Place Fort Worth/Stockyards. The front door practically opens onto the cattle drive route, so you can watch longhorns parade down Exchange Avenue just steps from your room. Rooms are modern and family-sized, and breakfast is includedâfuel before a day of cowboy hats, rodeos, and boot shopping. Staying overnight means you can enjoy the evening vibe without rushing back to Dallasâstring lights, live bands, and kids wide-eyed at the real-deal cowboy energy.
The Hyatt Place Fort Worth Stockyards has fewer great points deals in October, but we still found a 2 queen bed room available for a weekend getaway from 10/24 to 10/26 for 46K points, vs a cash price of $1824.97, for a 4.0 cpp redemption.
âď¸ Getting There: DAL vs. DFW
DAL (Love Field): The easy button. Southwest Airlines flies right into the heart of Dallas, just minutes from downtown. If youâve got the Companion Pass, this is where it shines. Fares are dynamicâalways recheck and rebook if prices drop to get points back.
DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth International): A major American Airlines hub with tons of nonstop options from all over the country. The catch? American Airlines is not a transfer partner of Chase or Amex, which means it rarely fits Rule #2 (redemption multipliers). That said, Rule #1 deals (go where the deals are) still pop up on AAâsometimes too cheap to ignore, even if youâre paying cash.
Ultra-low-cost carriers: Donât sleep on Spirit or Frontier. For quick weekend getaways where you pack light, these can be crazy cheap options in/out of DFW. Just stick to #teamnocheck to dodge bag fees and keep the savings intact.
đ Getting Around
Stay central: For Dallas-only, use rideshare/DART and skip a rental.
For Fort Worth: A car makes life easier. Pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred for primary coverage and check Rakuten for rental multipliers.
đĄ Family Travel Tips
- Pumpkin Pro: Plan Arboretum first thingâpumpkins look magical in morning light.
- Skyline Hack: Check into Hyatt, freshen up, and go straight to Reunion Tower for a sunset skyline memory.
- Cowboy Moment: Let the kids wear boots or hatsâtheyâll blend right in at the Stockyards and it makes the photos better.
- History Balance: Pair Dealey Plaza with a lighter activity (Klyde Warren Park food trucks or Dallas World Aquarium) so kids donât get overwhelmed.
đ Educational Opportunities
- Cowboys & Cattle Drives: Prep for the Stockyards with the story of the Chisholm Trail.
- Texas Frontier Life: Explore pioneer life with kid-friendly resources at Texas Beyond History.
- JFK Legacy: The Sixth Floor Museum Education Portal offers timelines, oral histories, and virtual exhibits.
â Q&A Corner
Q: Is the Dallas Arboretum really worth it, or is it just a fancy pumpkin patch?
A: Itâs on another level. Think pumpkin cityâover 100,000 pumpkins, gourds, and squash stacked into houses, arches, and scenes youâve never imagined. Itâs part art installation, part fall festival, and part bucket-list photo backdrop. Itâs not just worth itâitâs unforgettable.
Q: Can kids handle the Sixth Floor Museum?
A: Yes, with context. The exhibits are powerful but not graphic. Middle schoolers and up usually find it fascinating. For younger kids, spend more time outside at Dealey Plazaâstanding on the grassy knoll or seeing the âXâ on Elm Street gives them a tangible, age-appropriate connection.
Q: Is one night enough in Fort Worth?
A: Absolutely. With the Hyatt Place Stockyards as your base, youâll wake up in cowboy central, catch a cattle drive, wander Mule Alley, and still have time for music or shopping. If your family loves rodeo energy, you might even want two nights.
And speaking of questions, don't forget - you get to ask us any questions you want on this month's LIVE Q&A session: Oct 21, 10am PT/1pm ET. Click here to join the livestream.
