JGOOT Strategy
Instead of trying to see all of Nova Scotia in one vacation, focus on one region and enjoy it well.
For a first visit, we recommend using Halifax as your home base for several nights, then moving to either Lunenburg or Wolfville for the remainder of your trip. This allows families to experience both the city's maritime history and the province's spectacular coastline without spending every day packing luggage or driving for hours.
Families with additional vacation time can extend their adventure to Cape Breton Island and the world-famous Cabot Trail, but don't feel pressured to squeeze everything into one itinerary. Nova Scotia rewards travelers who slow down.

The primary gateway is Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), served by numerous Canadian airlines and seasonal service from several U.S. cities.
After arriving:

Nova Scotia is made for road trips. While Halifax is easy to explore on foot, many of the province's highlights—including Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, the Annapolis Valley, and the Bay of Fundy—are best reached by car.

One of Canada's most photographed lighthouses sits atop enormous granite rocks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the busiest crowds—and always respect the ocean safety warnings.
🐋 Whale Watching
Summer is prime whale watching season in Nova Scotia. Depending on where you go, you may spot humpback, minke, fin, or pilot whales, along with dolphins, seals, and countless seabirds.
🌊 Bay of Fundy
Witness the world's highest tides, where the shoreline transforms dramatically throughout the day. It's one of the most fascinating natural phenomena your family is likely to experience.

💡 JGOOT Tip
This is one of those rare trips where Hyatt probably isn't your best strategy.
Rather than forcing a hotel redemption simply because you have Hyatt points, compare the total value of Hilton, Marriott, independent hotels, and vacation rentals. Remember, the JGOOT philosophy isn't about using points at all costs—it's about getting the greatest overall value for your family.

Your U.S. Dollar Goes Further in Canada
For families considering an international vacation, there's good news: the U.S. dollar continues to provide excellent value in Canada. As of late July, one U.S. dollar is worth approximately 1.41 Canadian dollars, giving American travelers a little extra purchasing power throughout their trip.
What does that mean in practical terms? A hotel room advertised at CA$250 per night costs about US$177, and a CA$100 family dinner works out to roughly US$71 before taxes and gratuities. Those savings can add up quickly over the course of a week-long vacation.
The exchange rate isn't the only way to maximize your budget, though. One of the biggest mistakes international travelers make happens right at the payment terminal.
When paying with a credit card in Canada, you'll often be asked whether you'd like to pay in U.S. dollars or Canadian dollars. While seeing the amount in familiar currency may seem convenient, it's usually the more expensive choice. This process—called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)—allows the merchant to convert your purchase using their own exchange rate, which often includes an additional markup. Visa recommends that travelers review the offered conversion carefully and remember that choosing the local currency lets your card issuer handle the exchange instead.

Whenever you're traveling internationally:
✔️ Use a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees whenever possible.
✔️ Always choose to pay in the local currency (Canadian dollars in this case), not U.S. dollars.
✔️ Let your credit card network handle the conversion—you'll almost always receive a better exchange rate than the one offered at the register.
It's a small decision that takes only a few seconds, but over the course of an international vacation, it can save your family enough for an extra meal, museum admission, or whale-watching excursion.

The Acadians were among the first French settlers in Atlantic Canada and developed a unique culture that continues to shape Nova Scotia today. In 1755, thousands were forcibly removed from their homes during Le Grand Dérangement (The Acadian Deportation). Many eventually settled in Louisiana, where their descendants became known as Cajuns.
